Dhela opened to tourism in 2014 and is still the least crowded zone in Corbett. Like Jhirna it stays open all year, and the mixed forest here is excellent for birds and leopard.
Dhela is the newest zone in Jim Corbett, opened to visitors in 2014. It is a buffer zone on the southern side, close to Jhirna, and it has the same big advantage — it stays open all year.
Why we like Dhela
Fewer jeeps. That is the honest answer. Because it is newer and less famous, Dhela does not get the pressure that Bijrani gets on a December weekend. You can spend twenty minutes at one waterhole without four other vehicles arriving.
The habitat is genuinely varied — sal forest, mixed scrub, dry riverbeds and small waterholes. It is very good for leopard, and birders do well here.
When Dhela makes sense
- You are travelling in the monsoon or shoulder season
- You have already done Bijrani and want something different
- You care more about a calm, unhurried safari than a guaranteed tiger
- You are birding — the species list here is excellent
The gate is roughly 13 km from Ramnagar. We often pair Dhela with Bijrani across two days so you see two very different faces of the same forest.
