Jhirna stays open through the monsoon when the core zones close, which makes it the only real option for a summer or rainy season trip. It is also the most reliable zone in Corbett for spotting sloth bear.

Jhirna is a buffer zone on the southern edge of the park, and its biggest advantage is simple: it does not close in the monsoon. When Dhikala and Bijrani shut down from July to October, Jhirna keeps running.

What it is good for

Jhirna is old farmland that the forest has taken back. Villages here were resettled decades ago, so you get a mix of scrub, regenerating forest and open ground. That mix suits certain animals very well.

  • Sloth bear — Jhirna is the most dependable zone in Corbett for them
  • Wild boar and deer — very high numbers on the open ground
  • Birds — the mixed habitat brings in a wide range of species

Tigers are present and are seen, but honestly, less often than in Bijrani or Dhikala. If your one goal is a tiger, we will say so and suggest a different zone.

Who Jhirna suits

Anyone travelling in the monsoon or in the peak of summer, anyone who wants a quieter safari without the peak-season rush, and anyone more interested in the whole forest than in one particular animal.

The gate is around 16 km from Ramnagar, so it is an easy morning drive.

Why this zone

  • Open through the monsoon when core zones close
  • Best zone in Corbett for sloth bear
  • Quieter than Bijrani in peak season
  • Mixed scrub and grassland habitat
  • Very high deer and wild boar numbers
